Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump on Friday took to Twitter to laud the spirit of Jyoti Kumari. A migrant, Jyoti Kumari had to cover a distance of over 1,200 kilometres on a bicycle with her wounded father riding pillion.

“15 yr old Jyoti Kumari, carried her wounded father to their home village on the back of her bicycle covering +1,200 km over 7 days,” Ivanka Trump said in a tweet. She further added, “This beautiful feat of endurance & love has captured the imagination of the Indian people and the cycling federation!”

Ivanka is referring to the Cycling Federation of India’s decision to invite Jyoti Kumari to appear for a trial in the month of June. Onkar Singh, Chairman of the Cycling Federation of India had told a news agency that Jyoti, a class eight student, will be invited for the trial. If she clears the trials, Jyoti will be selected as a trainee at the National Cycling Academy at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) stadium in New Delhi.

Jyoti was in Haryana’s Gurugram at the time of the nationwide lockdown. Owing to the lack of any public transport, she decided to return to her native home in Bihar along with her ailing father. With no other option in hand, Jyoti Kumari managed to cover a distance of over 1,200 kilometers on her bicycle with her father riding pillion.

Her story is being hailed as an exemplary depiction of the hardships faced by migrants, thousands of whom walked hundreds of kilometers on foot to return to their native homes during the ongoing nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
