- Rohit also equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most hundreds in World Cups
From struggling for consistency to becoming one of the most reputed openers in world cricket, Rohit Sharma has grown leaps and bounds over the last 10 years. The India vice-captain had a dream run in the 2019 World Cup, scoring 648 runs as records tumbled in England.
On this day, last year, Rohit Sharma broke a world record by becoming the first man to score 5 hundreds in a single edition of the World Cup. Rohit had broken Kumar Sangakkara’s record as the Sri Lanka great hit 4 hundreds in World Cup 2015.
It was also Rohit’s 6th hundred in his World Cup career. He had scored a hundred in the quarter-final against Bangladesh in 2015. He drew level with Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds in World Cup history.
Rohit smashed 103 from just 94 balls, hitting 14 boundaries and 2 sixes against Sri Lanka at Leeds. Rohit and KL Rahul combined to add 189 runs for the opening stand as India gunned down a 265-run target in less than 44 overs.
It was also Rohit’s 3rd successive World Cup 2019 hundred as he had scored 3-figure scores against England and Bangladesh in the lead up to the Sri Lanka game. India wrapped up the league stages with a table-topping win after Rohit and Rahul’s hundreds.
Rohit also ended the group stages of the World Cup in 2019 with 647 runs. No man has ever scored more than that tally in the league stages of the World Cup.
Rohit managed just 1 run in the semi-final against New Zealand but his tally of 648 is the third highest in a single edition of the World Cup after Sachin Tendulkar (673 – 2003 World Cup) and Matthew Hayden (659 in 2007 World Cup).
Rohit finished the World Cup 2019 campaign with 648 runs at an average of 81.00. A dream run that will be hard to emulate in the years to come.
