A smartphone when folded, a tablet when unfolded – the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G comes with almost everything you could want in a foldable phone. It features a mind-bending glass screen that folds like a book, a hands-free camera that automatically snaps when you wave, and a precision-crafted hinge that transforms a cutting-edge smartphone into something much more. Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is re-engineered with a sleek, unified design that delivers a smooth, high-end feel. And as is evident from its name, the device is 5G ready to keep you at the top of your game!
With the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, I truly believe that Samsung has taken the cutting-edge design of the foldable smartphone to another level. Featuring a design refined by precision engineering and expert craftsmanship, and an even more flexible form factor and UX, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G brings together the very best of foldable technology. Another thing I particularly liked about this foldable device’s form factor is the size.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G isn’t your regular foldable phone; it’s something quite special. I used this device for about a day, and I can easily say, it’s a device I’m already in love with. You can carry it around – either folded or unfolded, and it won’t go unnoticed. Yes, it’s THAT attractive.
The all-new Galaxy Z Fold2 5G has two displays, an outer display called Cover Screen, and a larger Main Screen – the one you see when you unfold the device.
When folded, it’s an avant-garde smartphone with a 6.2-inch screen—a generous display with plenty of room for quick tasks, simple browsing, checking messages, playing your favourite music — precisely for things that do not require much visual fuel. I used its outer display for things I need on the move. WhatsApp, Spotify, settings, weather app – that’s all. I opened it only for anything that took more than a few seconds. Slack conversations, emails, PPTs or reading in Feedly required the full canvas. Not only does the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G feature a large Cover Screen and huge Main Screen with Infinity-O Displays, but it also sports a thinner form factor which makes it more comfortable to grip. At 282g, it’s slightly heavier, but I think that makes it less likely to fall out of my pockets. So that’s a plus here.
Unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G offers you an immersive tablet experience. The bigger display is made from Samsung’s Ultra-Thin Glass. The 7.6-inch foldable display delivers rich colours of Dynamic AMOLED 2X and its screen emits reduced blue light, so you can unfold to a mini laptop-sized viewing experience and enjoy for hours while minimizing the eye strain. Inside, social apps, productivity tools, and entertainment apps cover my home screen. For a quick random scroll through your Instagram feed, for example, it would make sense to use the secondary display. As you’d expect, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G’s larger display is also perfect for watching YouTube or Netflix. Apart from that, reading and typing also feel just so natural on the display.
Hideaway Hinge
The hinge is the most important part of a foldable smartphone, if it isn’t solid, the device is merely just a paperweight. Galaxy Z Fold2 5G’s Hideaway Hinge is an advanced engineering marvel, precision-crafted to smooth out your every fold and unfold. In simple terms, it’s smooth, sturdy, and controlled. Together with Samsung’s sweeper technology, the Hideaway Hinge enables a stable Flex mode experience with its free stand capability. It transforms into a compact companion whenever you want. Thanks to its super smooth hinge, I was able to lock the screen at a variety of angles. The screen can also stand on its own from 75 to 115 degrees.
Not just in its two native form factors, I could also lock the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G’s display at different angles, and use the phone accordingly. Say, you’re attending a video call, you can simply switch to Flex mode and handle the group video call while you’re working from home. It lets you binge watch shows, browse, work on projects, and play your favorite games.
Seen those oddly satisfying videos on the Internet? Folding and unfolding the Samsung Galaxy Fold2 5G just feels that satisfying. There are no grinding parts, no scraping sound. When you unfold the device, it makes a subtle crunchy sound just before it is totally opened, which I suppose could be because of the screen layers stretching open or the sides making contact with the hinge. The way the Galaxy Fold2 5G snaps close (and opens again) firmly and very reassuringly, it’s all very very satisfying, and to an extent, even addictive.
Flex mode
It’s all in the Flex! While I was reviewing (read: enjoying using this phone), the Flex Mode on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G increased the ease of use considerably. I could use the phone from a variety of angles and even hold it more comfortably using this mode. While in the Flex Mode, the device can be used to make hands-free video calls with Google Duo. Want to watch a video link your best friend sent to you on WhatsApp/FB Messenger in detail? All you have to do is, simply click on the link and watch content right on the Cover Screen – that too in both portrait and landscape modes.
Whether you are attending a virtual office meeting or making a new dish following a video recipe in the kitchen, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G can free up your hands and give you more flexibility while multitasking.
Landscape Flex Mode
Unfold the device fully for a more immersive entertainment experience. Featuring an Infinity-O Display with 120Hz refresh rate, Galaxy Z Fold2 5G’s fully unfolded 7.6-inch Main Screen offers real-life-like dynamic visuals. Select apps such as the Google Duo, YouTube, have been specifically optimized for the Flex Mode. While you’re in a video call, the person you are calling appears on the top half of the display with your image on a floating thumbnail. You can also drag your thumbnail all around the upper display. Google Duo call controls, including AR emoji, portrait, wide-angle, low light, and more appear on the bottom half. I used the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G in landscape Flex Mode for watching my favourite show on Netflix. Thanks to its high-dynamic dual speakers, I thoroughly enjoyed the incredible sound quality while watching the show.
Playback and browsing in Flex Mode
I have to say this, the folding mechanism has been vastly improved in the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G. Flex Mode is just perfect for working on important documents or presentations. Its large screen lets you access more content quickly while letting you drag and drop content across different apps.
With the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G half-open, you can watch a video on the upper half of the Main Screen and the video’s settings on the lower half. Similarly, when using the Video call app, each participant’s image would be shown on the upper half of the screen and controls will be there on the lower half. Watching videos/movies on a mobile device was never this fun!
Shoot with maximum flexibility with Flex Mode
Flex Mode is even better for smartphone photography. The Galaxy Z Fold2 5G’s cameras become more amazing when used with the Flex Mode. You can click pictures or shoot videos exactly the way you want. Both the outside and the inside displays sport 10-megapixel selfie cameras. At the back, you have three 12-megapixel sensors with wide, telephoto, and ultra-wide lenses. With the help of the Flex Mode, you can capture hands-free stills and videos from unique angles, adding a unique perspective to everything you shoot. It’s kind of a neat trick.
Simply turn on the Camera app on the Cover Screen and tap on the Rear Cam Selfie button. You can then unfold the device to take selfies with the rear camera while using the Cover Screen as a viewfinder. Galaxy Z Fold2 5G offers a split view of the Camera app, letting you easily preview images and videos while offering controls at the bottom. Flex Mode can make it easier to shoot video blogs without keeping your hands busy. I loved turning on the Flex Mode by slightly folding the device while keeping the device up in the air vertically when taking pictures on the go. On the right side of the screen is a camera preview screen and on the left is the gallery.
Dual Preview is incredible
With Dual Preview, both the photographer and subject can view shots before they’re taken.
Taking a groupfie (group selfie)? See the perfect shot before you take it. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G lets you use both the screens to make sure everyone likes the shot before you tap the shutter button. With the incredible Dual Preview feature, the photographer and subject can both see the preview of the image as it displays it on the cover and internal display of the phone. Imagine getting crystal clear output from angles you never imagined before!
