Viral pic: Zucchini became ‘Jugni’ at this Punjabi supermarket.
Whether it’s the bright and fresh avocados or tiny cherry tomatoes, we have incorporated many international foods seamlessly in Indian cuisines. A number of exotic fruits and vegetables are available in the comfort of our local stores and supermarkets, thanks to rapid globalisation and a highly interconnected world. When these exotic fruits and vegetables meet ‘desi’ audiences is when hilarity ensues! A picture of the vegetable Zucchini placed at an aisle in a local supermarket in Punjab has the internet in splits. See why:
When Zucchini Comes to Punjab.
The Punjabi dialect didn`t even spare poor Zucchini once it`s been to Ludhiana. pic.twitter.com/euSelaYPVs— Dr Aman kashyap (@DrAmankashyap) November 18, 2020
The picture was shared on Twitter by user @DrAmankashyap and it depicted the hilarious situation of Zucchini and what happened to it when it came to Punjab. Although the packaging read ‘Zucchini, the staff at the supermarket labelled the vegetable as ‘Jugni’, which is a term of endearment used in many Punjabi songs. “The Punjabi dialect didn’t even spare poor Zucchini once it’s been to Ludhiana,” laughed the user in his tweet.
The tweet went viral on social media, garnering 3.7k likes, as well as several hundred comments and retweets. Several users pointed out how low the prices of the exotic vegetable were as compared to other cities in India. Many users also laughed that the mispronunciation and misspelling of Indian names is common abroad too. Others couldn’t help but hum a few tunes with the word ‘Jugni’ in them. Take a look at the reaction tweets:

Jugni sounds so much better. I might even try to eat it because of this name change.
