Get a life guys: Sanjay Manjrekar responds after being slammed over tweet on locust attack

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has lashed out at trolls who slammed him over his comments about the locust menace in the country. Manjrekar on Thursday took to social media to say that his last tweet where he asked people not to panic was meant for those living in flats and not for the farmers.

Manjrekar had earlier tweeted out that there was no need to panic about the locusts since “we are not crop”. However, the cricketer-turned commentator received backlash over his remarks as many called him insensitive.

Just hours later, Majrekar posted a strong statement in his defence and said people who were slamming him for being insensitive towards farmers should know that he had reached out to farmers in distress and had also paid off loans of a few families.

“Get a life guys! Last tweet was meant lightly for Mumbai folks living in flats & panicking because of locusts.” Majrekar tweeted.

“Me, insensitive to farmers?? This is a person who travelled to Marathwada & visited houses of farmers who had committed suicide & yes, paid off loans of a few farmer families and want to do so much more. Had never shared this with the public, but had to today, to shut certain toxic people up,” he added.

Desert locust swarms have become the latest threat looming large on India amid the series of crises induced by the coronavirus pandemic. With several states in north India struggling to keep the large swarms of locusts at bay, the worst in 27 years, the government has moved to use advanced sprayers and drones to stop acres of crop from being damaged.

Desert locusts that first attacked farmlands in Rajasthan have now spread to Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The Locust Warning Organisation (LWO) has also issued high alerts for Punjab and Haryana where a swarm that is on the move is expected to enter.
