HIGHLIGHTS

  • David Warner the IPL title win was because of ‘a big family effort’
  • The title was first for Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • SRH had defeated RCB by 8 runs in the final

There is a speculation about an IPL date every other day but things still aren’t clear, it looks all hazy for the moment but back in 2016 Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had the time of their life during this time of the year.

On May 29, 2016, an Orange Army led by Australia opener David Warner triumphed over the mighty RCB batting line-up consisting of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, KL Rahul and Shane Watson. At one point of time RCB were cruising with a 114-run opening stand between Gayle and Kohli but then they collapsed like a house of card and were stopped 8 runs short of the 208-run target.

David Warner shared an ‘on this day’ picture on Instagram today and very rightly captioned it saying that SRH’s maiden IPL triumph was a “a big family effort”.

The picture shared by the SRH captain David Warner shows teammates including Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Eoin Morgan, Shikhar Dhawan and Trent Boult in it.

“#OTD2016 so proud of all the people who were involved. Was a big family effort,” Warner captioned the picture.

In the 2016 season David Warner had led from the front and finished as edition’s 2nd-highest run-scorer after Virat Kohli. Warner smashed 848 runs at an strike rate of 151.42. The Australian ended up scoring 9 fifties and 1 hundred in the 2016 season. Also, he scored 88 fours and 31 sixes en route his team’s authoritative victory.

Shikhar Dhawan with 501 runs in the series had given David Warner a good support throughout that summer of 2016. Dhawan also scored briskly at a strike-rate of 116.78.

The bowling duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman were all over the opposition as they ended up with 23 and 17 wickets, respectively. In fact, Bhuvneshwar was the Purple Cap holder in the 2016 IPL.

SRH reached in the final of 2018 IPL as well but succumbed in front of MS Dhoni’s men who routed a David-Warner less team by 8 wickets. Warner, has replaced Kane Williamson as the team’s captain for the 2020 edition and will surely be looking to put his hand again on the coveted trophy.
