Former West Indies pacer Tino Best is the recent cricketer to share his experience on facing racism in the game. Calling England a racist place, Best said racism was so prevalent there, that he would have played cricket anywhere in the world except the United Kingdom.

Tino Best’s comments have come after other West Indian cricketers, including Chris Gayle and Daren Sammy, expressed outrage over racism in the game. Several athletes have been speaking against racism following the death of an unarmed black man in the USA.

“I would go and play club cricket anywhere in the world but not in England. It’s a very racial place. So what Darren (Sammy) and Chris (Gayle) are saying is absolutely true,” Best said during an Instagram Live show Say Yash To Sports.

“I feel whenever anyone faces racism, call it out, speak about it and don’t fear about the consequences.”

“I used to come to the ground and bowl quick and guys would have wanted to beat me up for bowling fast. I was in this situation when if I did not have a strong team they would have probably lynched me.”

“But, you know I tell everyone Tino La Bertram Best is a different type of black man. I was a free black man. Don’t come to me. If you ever disrespect me. I am going to hurt you,” he added.

Earlier, two-time T20 World Cup-winning skipper Daren Sammy had opened up about being called ‘Kalu’ — a derogatory word to describe black people — by his Sunrisers Hyderbad teammates and demanded an apology from the bunch earlier this week.

Sammy urged the International Cricket Council to raise awareness of the fight against racism, giving it the same attention as its anti-corruption drive.
