The name ‘Muesli‘ comes from an old word from German which roughly translated to ‘puree’. The origin of the term ‘Bircher’ is credited to Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner who is said to have invented the dish at his clinic in the late 19th century. The original recipe or Bircher Muesli included apple, oats, nuts, lemon juice, honey and milk and was intended to be served fresh for breakfast.
This Bircher Muesli recipe is pretty close to the Swiss original, as it uses a whole fresh apple as well as honey, milk and oats. Dried berries are also used in this recipe to give it a refreshing, fruity flavour. Almonds are also added to the Bircher Muesli in order to give it a delightful nutty zing. The best part about the recipe is that it is super easy to prepare, in fact, an absolute no-brainer you just can’t go wrong with. Simply top up all the ingredients in a jar and refrigerate overnight to enjoy a delightful breakfast you can’t refuse!
