Virat Kohli better white-ball player than Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma: Wasim Jaffer

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has selected India captain Virat Kohli as the best white-ball cricketer of India, The statement is a bold one as people usually refrain from commenting on this comparisons between Virat Kohli and legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Notably, Virat Kohli in his 248 match ODI career has smashed over 11,000 runs at an average of almost 60. During the process the Delhi dazzler has smashed 43 centuries also. On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar is ODI crickets highest run-scorer with 18,426 runs in his kitty. The legendary Mumbai batsman played in 463 ODIs and averaged 44.83 in his career. Sachin Tendulkar had hit 49 ODI centuries in his more than 20-year-long ODI career.

Further, while talking to CricTracker, Wasim Jaffer called Sourav Ganguly the best captain he played under. The reasons given by the 42-year-old batsman were very valid as he pointed out the fact that Ganguly made a barnd new team from the scratc after the match-fixing scandal hit Indian cricket. Jaffer credited Ganguly for bringing in players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh in the team.

“Sourav Ganguly was the one who made the team after 2000. He had the temperament, backed the players and gave them a longer rope. He made Sehwag open the batting and brought players like Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh,” he told.

Wasim Jaffer had a more than fulfilled domestic career but it was his international career which couldn’t blossom despite his extraordinary skills at Test level. Jaffer is the only player to score over 10,000 runs in Ranji Trophy, he kept on piling up runs even his 40s. Wasim Jaffer made his Test debut in 2000 and played the last match of his 31-match long Test career in 2008.

Jaffer, who is currently the coach of Uttarakhand state team, reckoned that he matured as a player after being dropped from the Indian squad but unfortunately, he could never get a chance to show his skills at the highest level again.

“There are changes when you lose. The match-fixing scandal happened after the series and there was a big break with no Test series for a while. When you lose there are so much chopping and changing. I also didn’t do well and made way for somebody else. I went back to the drawing board, scored runs and came back in 2002. In my last comeback when I played from 2005 to 2008, I was okay.

“After I was dropped, I became even a better player, but I never got an opportunity. Year after year, I kept on plundering runs in Ranji Trophy, but I never got a look in. I was around 30 years old and it was a bit disappointing. I became much more matured and understood my game, my strengths and weaknesses. But it’s a bit of a regret that I didn’t get to represent India again,” Wasim Jaffer said.
