Diabetes can not be cured but you can always fall back on your diet to manage it. Consuming diabetic-friendly, low-glycemic foods is an effective way to regulate blood sugar levels. Refined all-purpose flour (maida) is a big no-no and whole wheat flour (atta) may not be too good either for diabetics. Ironically, these two flours are used most often to make everyday Indian breads. Winters give us a chance to replace regular rotis with the ones made of gluten-free flours like bajra and jowar. Since these alternative flours carry warming properties, this is the best time to start including them in your diet.

Roti made with jowar flour and methi leaves is an excellent choice for diabetes diet. Jowar (sorghum) millet contains complex carbohydrates, which are digested slowly and release sugar in the bloodstream gradually. Bangalore-based nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood says, “Jowar is rich in good quality fibre which can aid digestion, manage obesity and regulate blood sugar levels.”

Methi (fenugreek) is already well-known for its anti-diabetes qualities. Every diabetes patient is advised to consume methi in the form of fresh leaves, seeds or infused drinks.

Bringing both the foods together, this methi jowar roti can be a great option to complete your Indian meals. Here’s how you can make it –

Methi Jowar Roti Recipe:

Ingredients for 9-10 rotis:

2 cups jowar flour
11/2 methi leaves
3 tbsp whole wheat flour
2 onions, finely chopped
2-3 green chillies, finely chopped
Salt to taste
Red chilli powder to taste
Lukewarm water for kneading
1-2 tbsp oil

Method:

Step 1 – Combine jowar flour, salt, red chilli powder and whole wheat flour. Mix well.

Step 2 – Add oil and knead the dough lightly till wet and binds with oil.

Step 3 – Now add methi leaves, chopped onion and chopped green chillies, mix and knead the dough with lukewarm water.

Step 4 – Cover the dough and let it rest for at least 20 minutes.

Step 5 – Roll rotis from the dough and cook on both the sides on tawa with some oil or ghee. Serve hot.

You can pair methi jowar roti with any sabzi of your liking or simply have it with curd or raita. It may seem a little difficult to roll the roti at first, but with practice, you’ll become pro at it!
