Former Pakistan opener Taufeeq Umar has said he tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Taufeeq developed a mild fever and he got himself tested for Covid-19 on Saturday.

Taufeeq Umar said his symptoms were ‘not at all severe’ and that he has isolated himself at his residence.
“I got myself tested last night after feeling a little sick last night, and the result came positive. My symptoms are not at all severe,” Taufeeq told Geo News.

“I have isolated myself at home,” he further said, adding: “I appeal to everyone to pray for my swift recovery.”

While several footballers have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Taufeeq Umar is the first high-profile cricketer to have tested positive. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought normal lives to a grinding halt across the globe.

Taufeeq, who made his international debut for Pakistan in 2001, played 44 Tests and 22 ODI in a career that spread across 13 years.

Taufeeq scored 2963 runs in Test cricket at an average of 37.98 while he managed just 504 runs in ODI cricket.

More than 53, 13, 850 people have been infected by the virus across the globe as of Sunday, May 24.

Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the global sporting calendar. Several major tournaments, including the Tokyo Olympics and Wimbledon, have either been postponed or cancelled due to the crisis situation.

Cricket has also been affected by the novel coronavirus as several tours have already been postponed or cancelled. The Pakistan Super League was suspended before the final stages while Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended until further notice.

International tours are looking set to resume at least from July with England Cricket Board reportedly willing to host West Indies and Pakistan later this year.
